Here I am, grappling with the aftermath of chemo, aching bones from hormone blockers, and the heartache of gaining weight after fighting the hardest 3 years I've ever faced: Ductal Carcinoma In-Situ in 2021 followed by Ductal Invasive Carcinoma in 2022. Active treatment ended October 2023 when I removed my ovaries—interestingly enough, on Halloween day. Yet, those monthly appointments and weight checks serve as stark reminder that the journey is far from over.
Exercise was never my first love, but it's become my path (no matter how rocky) to rediscovering strength and reclaiming my body. Walking, for me, started as a major feat when the conditioning I worked so hard for in my healthy days was suddenly depleted. Now, walking has become an act of defiance—a way to navigate the emotional and physical haze lingering after my treatment. Four to five times a week, I take that hour-long walk, and with every step, I embrace the healing power of fresh air and movement. It’s not just exercise; it’s a declaration that I am more than my challenges.
Yoga entered my life as a gentle reminder to slow down, breathe deeply, and find self-compassion. Though I can only manage 20 minutes right now, each session is my sanctuary—a space where I stretch my body and soul. In the stillness, I reconnect with my inner self, finding peace amidst the turmoil.
Strength training came next, with 5 lb. dumbbells as my allies in this journey. Each session is a testament to my resilience. It’s more than lifting weights—it’s about lifting my spirit and fortifying my body against the trials I face.
In my quest for strength and compassion for my aching body, and with a reluctance to go live and public at a gym, I've found some incredible videos on YouTube. Knowing I'm not alone in this endeavor, I wanted to share the videos that have helped me balance exhaustion with compassion.
